About The Africa Contact Group for Mental Health and Deafness [ACGMHD] consists of volunteer Deaf and hearing individuals, professionals and community leaders concerned about the health and well-being of Deaf people and their families on the African continent.

Objectives:

  • Unite efforts of all parties interested to improve the bio-psycho-socio-economic health and wellbeing of Deaf people and their families on the African continent
  • Strive for accessible, available, affordable, equal and appropriate health and mental health services for Deaf people and their families on the African continent
  • Promote equal human rights for Deaf children and their families
  • Press for equal and quality education and training, free of communication barriers, for Deaf children and adults at school and teriary level
  • Press for Deaf participation and self-representation in all public and political processes in Society in the spirit of "Nothing about us without us"
  • Promote parent and family guidance programmes for families with Deaf members
  • Promote opportunities for Deaf people to provide mental health services for Deaf people
  • Promote training of Deaf and Hearing professionals in mental health and deafness
  • Promote respect for Deaf peoples' language and culture
  • Sensitize African structures such as The Pan African Union, NEPAD, and SADC of the need for accessible and appropriate mental health services for Deaf people in countries on the African Continent
  • Liaise and co-operate with the United Nations and the World Federation for the Deaf as well as other relevant world organizations.
  • Encourage data collection and research on the situation relating to the mental health of Deaf people in countries on the African continent
  • Disseminate knowledge, skills and expertise relating to the health and well-being of Deaf people and their familiies
  • Facilitate interaction / In-depth discussion / debate between individuals and role players concerned with the mental health of Deaf people in countries on the African Continent
  • Stimulate the development of and provide support for networks furthering parent and guidance programs for Deaf children and their families.
  • Convene international symposiums, thematic seminars, study visits, exchange of good practice and other activities to support the aims of ACGMHD
  • Exchange information and ideas on mental health and deafness in countries on the African continent
  • Enhance participation of countries on the African continent and organizations relevant to mental health and deafness
