5-th Annual Summer Symposium
"Adolescence - Development, Treatment, and Community"

( Refer to the meeting's Web pages.)

Event sponsor: American Orthopsychiatric Association [Ortho]

June 21-25, 2010
Eastham, Cape Cod, MA

This Symposium addresses the multiple challenges faced by today's adolescents in their development, in clinical services, and in their successful integration into our communities. These important citizens of our nation experience the burdens of a more complex developmental trajectory in the face of over-burdened educational systems, over-stressed families, and unresponsive communities. This is so in spite of much attention by the popular press and by policy makers to the challenges they face. Such attention often focuses on their failings and does not celebrate their capacities and resilience. Additionally, the special needs of culturally diverse youth are often not acknowledged or effectively addressed.

The Symposium features a slate of faculty renowned for their cross-disciplinary, developmentally appropriate and youth driven perspectives in addressing the needs of adolescents. The focus of the presentations will be on preventive approaches and resiliency building amongst our youth, youth empowerment, the development of effective approaches to identifying and addressing mental health needs in adolescents, and therapeutic approaches that are most effective in engaging and resulting in developmental success. Cultural and linguistic issues and the community relevance of these strategies/interventions will be addressed. Participants will learn concrete skills needed to implement specific evidence-based or empirically supported practices, including cultural and linguistically appropriate adaptations and approaches to the empowerment of youth in communities.

Program:

  • Promoting Youth Development, Resiliency and Prevention with Youth of Color
    • Carl Bell, MD, Director, Institute for Juvenile Research; Professor, University of Illinois School of Medicine, Chicago
