About Besod Siach was founded in 1991 to transform the antagonistic and intolerant climate within which religious, political, social and ethnic-cultural differences are dealt with in Israel; to promote a pluralistic and democratic value system; and to help leaders from all sides find better solutions to the challenges of mutual co-existence in an evolving Israeli culture.

The organization provides professional consultation and facilitation in the area of inter-group relations, especially between religious and secular groups and the political left and right. It also trains group facilitators to further this end.

2-nd International Scientific Congress
"When an Object Turns to be a Subject - Transformative Dialogue and the 'Other'"

Event sponsored by: Besod Siach

August 15-17, 2010
Neve Ilan, Israel

Co-sponsored by the Israeli Association of Group Psychotherapy.

In traditional conferences, the staff, management and the participants are objects. This is the basis for most of the working hypotheses in all the learning events. This Congress offers an opportunity to explore ways in which more recent analytical methods and approaches, like the Inter-Subjective approach, can be integrated in our praxis and theoretical work.

The primary task of the conference is to explore how "The Other"— an object for splitting, projections, projective identification and other defense mechanisms against anxiety—becomes a subject throughout the dialogue experience; and when two people or groups can create an inter-subjective space for a such a dialogue. A central working hypothesis is that anxieties from annihilation and destruction in personal, national and sociological levels (systemic level) produce defenses like splitting, projections, etc.

The original psychological basis in the work of Besod Siach for many years is the open system theory, based mainly on the works of Bion, Rice, Miller, etc. Group Relations conferences, the foundation of our methodology, often lead to profound change and transformation in the individual’s understanding of self, organizations, and the self in organizations. We have changed the learning focus from the individual to those parts in well define parts of society which are in conflict, so the learning and understanding is about the "Systemic holistic self", the system itself and the unconscious processes that caused such conflicts. Another basic concept is the Kleinian- Bionian perspective, in which inner conflicts are projected or evacuated on the "Other", through projection of our inner "enmity" on him (S Erlich). In all those experiences, annual conferences were found to be the most valuable tools for learning through experience those aspects of rivalry within the boundaries of a society, sub systems or a system as a whole.

We will have an opportunity to explore a variety of theories—from Bion and Foulks, through Object Relation approach, the Independent Group, up to the Relational and Inter Subjective approaches.

Official language: Hebrew, with some English events.

Deadline for abstracts or proposals: 4/20/2010.
